::TOP STORY::
- Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, a long time revolutionary, an anti-apartheid activist, a loving grandfather, and the first ever president of a new South Africa...is dead. Mandela was born in the tribal village of Mvezo, Eastern Cape, on July 18, 1918. He was a son of a African tribe. He went to college at Fort Hare University, but was expelled due to a strike. When the National Party won the election of 1948, leading to the establishment of Apartheid, Mandela became a political activist. He became a member of the African National Congress. He wanted to have a free and non-violent South Africa, but the government brought in killings on the protesters. Mandela was arrest for treason in 1962, and was sentenced to life. For a long time, he spent years in Robben Island, until 1988 when he moved to Victor Verster. Violence between the people and the government heightened, with other countries implementing sanctions in the late 1980's. With South Africa at stake, F.W. de Klerk was elected as the last state president in 1989. His plan was to transformed the country into a democratic state for all. This also meant that Nelson Mandela would be released in 1990, after almost 27 years behind bars. Once after being free, he met the South African people for the first time, and was ready to reconcile the country and destroy the Apartheid regime. Conservative Afrikaners objected the negotiations, therefore de Klerk lost three by-elections. In response, a "whites only" referendum asked people if negotiations should continue. 68% voted yes. This would lead to the peaceful 1994 elections for all, installing Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela as the first president of a new South Africa. Reconciliation was a dream come true. Mandela ended his term in 1999, but his legacy lives on. He was honored by so many countries, including the U.S., Canada, Cuba, UK, and others. He, along side de Klerk, won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. In the last days of before death, he was suffering from health failures. He died today from a lung infection...at 95. He is the most popular sensation in history.
- The minutes I saw the report that Nelson Mandela died, I was in a state of shock. I was crushed by the fact that the revolutionary man died already. I have read about the prejudice in America, and how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. helped the country by peacefully stopping the army of segregation flow in the south. Unfortunately, his life was cut short in 1968. With more riots on his death, the loss of Robert F. Kennedy, and the slowing down of the counterculture, conservatives had to step in. They tried to slow down the integration process, but failed. Then in 2008, Barack Obama was elected as the first black president of America, a major history. History is always kept, and I want to say that hatred is like a heart crushed with tears. Republicans are gripping tight with their southern strategy. IT MUST STOP! They must focus on change. Before I go, I want to say thank you to Mandela for taking South Africa into a new life. God bless you, and may he take care of you.
