BIG RANT!!! (ATLANTA RADIO), Part Two

  • We continue "BIG RANT!!!" with the death of Atlanta radio.
  • We start off with WYAY-FM. It was born in 1949 as WDUN-FM. Since the switch to its callsign change to WYAY-FM in 1984, it was a country station as "Y106". Still retaining country music in a classic manner, its new name was "The Eagle" in 2000. In 2008, the station became and oldies station, with a new name "True Oldies". Four years later, the change happened again. It is now an all-news radio station.
  • We now have WWWQ-FM 99.7. It was first known as WLTA-FM, in 1955 (first air date). It was a soft listening station, until 1984, when it transformed into Adult Contemporary, as they competed with WSB-FM. In 1986, its name was "Power 99", with a Top-40 format, competing with WZGC-FM. "Power 99's" format would change again, become "99X", a modern rock station, with a new callsign WNNX-FM. It would last for sixteen years. After noticing low ratings, the station switched back to Top-40 as "Q-100" (formerly on the now WNNX-FM 100.5) in 2008. The 99X format returned to a low-power station on 97.9 FM, later 99.1 FM, and then 98.9. The "99X" tradition ended in 2012, when it became "The Bone". Today, it switched again, becoming a country station known as "The Walk. "99X" IS GONE!!!
  • There is a station where it's long rock tradition died, WWPW-FM. It started in 1960, as WGAA-FM. It switch into a rock format, as WKLS-FM, with its longtime name "96 ROCK". For 32 years, it was a popular rock station as "96 ROCK". Its life changed forever, when the station drop the "96 ROCK" name, in favor of "Project 9-6-1". That happened in 2006, but it was still a rock station. During that time, an incident happened when the Regular Guys recorded a conversation between Yogi and Panda of "Viva" (WWVA-FM) at a bathroom. The Regular Guys were fired. Six years later, the station most wonderful rock era completely died, as it swtich to another Top-40 station, as "Power 96.1", on August 29, 2012. Its callsign now became WWPW in September 2012. Long live the "96 ROCK/Project 9-6-1" era.
  • The most important station that brought death to Atlanta radio is: WGST-AM. Its roots go back in March 1922, days after WSB-AM came first. It took the WGST callsign since 1925. When the frequency switch occured, WGST moved to 640 AM, replacing WPBD. 920 AM became WAFS, and now since 2004 as WGKA. During WGST's time on 640 AM, it was simulcasted on WWVA-FM 105.7 (formerly WGST-FM). It ended in 2000. In 2012, WGST was the official victim of the Atlanta radio death. First, Rusty Humphries, Rob Johnson, and Dave Merlino were FIRED. Second, Rush Limbaugh moved to WSB (AM), and Glenn Beck to WCFO-AM. Finally on September 28, 2012, News-Talk WGST died, with the last program, Rush Limbaugh, now becoming ESPN Deportes Radio. Rest in peace.
  • I'm speechless...
