- The entire city of Atlanta, and the entire nation of America, remembers the legacy of Civil Rights activists Martin Luther King Jr., on what should be his 85th birthday. People have gathered for a ceremony of the Civil Rights activists, as they pay tribute to his legacy on stopping discrimination. The main MLK service was at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, which was broadcast on WAGA-TV. This was the church Dr. King preached. A variety of speakers have appeared at the ceremony, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
- Martin Luther King Jr. was born Michael King in Atlanta on January 15, 1929. He took the name current name, after honoring German reformer Martin Luther. He started in Civil Rights activism, by leading a protest boycotting Segregation on buses, which Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up a front for a white man. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was created in 1956. He was arrested for the boycott, but was quickly released. In 1963, MLK and his followers went to Washington D.C., for the "I have a dream" speech. This lead to the government passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, banning all types of discrimination. His life was cut short on April 4, 1968, when a white man shot him at a hotel, far away. He died. Violent riots followed after that. The killer, James Earl Ray, was arrested weeks later. After all this effort to stop racism, all minority are enjoying freedom, but has a long way to go. King has shown to the people that peace and conversations can stop all violence. May the lord protect him for life.
