BIG RANT!!! (ATLANTA RADIO), Part One

  • Hello, I would like to introduce BIG RANT!! A program on where I rant on a topic. This week's topic: Atlanta radio is OFFICIALLY ruined.
  • First, it's WWVA-FM and WWLG-FM. It started as WCHK on August 1, 1964. It broadcasted a country format. During that time, the station would be owned and operated by the most evil media company, Clear Channel. It would switch to a simulcast of WGST-AM in 1993. It broke from that station in 2000, when it became classic rock. The WWVA-FM that I knew, was "VIVA 105.7 FM", a station that broadcasted a spanish pop format. It was a good format as well. But that station would switch its format to the one today. It is now a Rhythmic Top 40, and has a simulcast station, WWLG-FM (since 2010). WWLG-FM was born in 1985. It started off as a Rhythmic Top 40 station in 2000. But only for a year, in 2005, it simulcasted the for "VIVA 105.7 FM". In 2006, the simulcast stopped, and the station became adult contemporary, and its competitor was WSB-FM. Then in 2007, it switched again, this time to country, leaving WSB-FM the only AC station in Atlanta. All of a sudden in 2010, the simulcast of WWVA-FM on this station would return, but the other station was a pop station. Today, both stations are now "Wild 105.7 and 96.7".
  • Next, it's WZGC-FM. Operations started on September 1, 1955, as WGKA-FM. It changed to today's WZGC-FM in 1972. A year later, it became the most popular Top 40 station in Atlanta, as "Z-93". 1986 came, with a new competitor, WAPW-FM (Power 99, now WWWQ-FM, Q100). The ratings on "Z-93" were starting to shrink, and they had to switch to an urban format in 1987, and then classic rock in 1989. In 2004, after 32 years of using the "Z-93" title, the station switched to an alternative format, and its new name was "92.9 Dave FM". Ratings were getting worse in late-2012. CBS (its owner) announced that WZGC-FM would switch to sports programming on October 24, 2012. Today, it is now "92.9 The Game". The long time "Z-93/Dave FM" era has died. There is not another station like "Z-93".
  • Next, it's WSB-AM and WSBB-FM, but first it's WSB-AM. WSB-AM is now a news/talk radio station affiliated with CBS Radio and the Georgia Bulldogs. It was established on March 15, 1922, claiming to be the first station in the south. During the 1920's to the 1950's, it was an affiliate of NBC Red Radio. After losing affiliation, it played most Adult Contemporary songs, with news, sports, and talk. At the end of the 80's, they lost the music system, and became an all-news/talk radio station. It is now 90 years old.
  • Now here's WSBB-FM. It started in 1948 as WGAU-FM. It later became WBTS-FM in 1999. At that time of the callsign switch, its format was a Top-40 station. It later competed with WWVA-FM in 2009. The switch suddenly came on August 16, 2010, when the station switch to a simulcast of WSB-AM. Two months later, the callsign now became WSBB-FM. We only have WILD FM as the only Rhythmic CHR station.
  • Now let's take a break, and focus on WSB-FM, Atlanta's ONLY Adult Contemporary station. Born in 1948, it has been AC since 1982, now known as B98.5FM. It had wonderful artists like: Phil Collins, Elton John, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and other soft rock artists. Wonderful DJ's were also there: Kelly Stevens (he came back in 2011), Alpha Trivette, Jordan Graye (still here), Steve McCoy, Vikki Locke (still here), and my most favorite of them all, KELLY MCCOY!!! I've listened to this station since 2006, and witnessed the changes in 2011. I was worry that it would become a Hot Ac station (different from Soft AC), or worse, another Top 40 station. It added Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, The Wanted, One Direction, and more pop-based artists. I was shambled in loss on April 27, 2012, when Kelly McCoy retired, after 27 years on this station. Now let's go to Christmas music. From the time I first listened to the station, to 2011, it played an all-Christmas format from Thanksgiving to Christmas. In 2012, I was shocked that between those holidays, they played a mix of the AC and Christmas formats. I got so angry at COX's (the company that owns B98.5FM) decision to stop holiday songs. Right now, the station is bringing back the good old soft rock music, only from the 80's and 90's. Music before 1980 is gone. It also used to broadcast the 80's during weekend's, until 2012. The 80's were my favorite. Now aside from the music, it also airs Public Affairs programs. My favorite program was "Change your mind, Change your life", until it ended in 2010. It was a therapy show, and I loved it. Today, it now broadcasts "Health Talk" with Dr. Joe Esposito. It's good as well.
  • Sorry, but I have to stop there for Part 2. Have a good day.
